Before You Redesign Your Website: What a Visibility Diagnostic Should Tell You
A new look fixes how your site looks. It doesn’t always fix why it isn’t working. Here’s how to find out before you pay for a rebuild.
Quick Take
Before redesigning your website, find out which problem you actually have: design, content, search, discovery, conversion, or tracking. A visibility diagnostic checks the evidence and hands you a prioritized plan. Sometimes that plan is a rebuild. Sometimes it calls for targeted changes instead.
The redesign quote on the desk
Consider a hypothetical plumbing company whose website isn’t bringing in inquiries. The site is a few years old, and the owner has a redesign quote in hand. The reasoning feels obvious: the site looks dated, so the site must be the problem.
Before anyone signs, a diagnostic checks the evidence. Several explanations are possible, and they don’t share a fix:
- The service pages appear in Google results, but for broad queries rather than the services the company most wants to sell.
- Analytics has no key event for phone taps, so calls that start on the website aren’t counted anywhere.
- The Business Profile lists a different service area than the website does.
- An AI tool, asked for a plumber in town, names other companies and describes this one vaguely.
A new design could improve the look. It wouldn’t, on its own, add the missing key event, align the Business Profile, or change which queries the pages match. Telling those apart is a visibility diagnostic’s job, before anyone quotes you a redesign.
Our take: a redesign can solve the wrong problem
We’ve built websites since 2001, including custom WordPress sites, and we like building them. We still tell owners not to start a redesign until someone has shown them which layer is broken.
If the real gap is a mismatched Business Profile or an untracked contact form, you can pay for a rebuild and still have the problem.
Six layers that look like “the website isn’t working”
From the outside, these all look the same. The evidence tells them apart.
| Layer | What you notice | Evidence we check | Where the fix lives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design | The site feels dated or is hard to use on a phone | Mobile layouts, navigation, page speed, how fast the main message lands | Design and UX changes, sometimes a rebuild |
| Content | People land but can’t tell what you do or who it’s for | Service pages, messaging consistency, thin or missing pages | Rewrites and new service or location pages |
| Search | Few people find you on Google for the services you sell | Search Console queries, pages, impressions, clicks, indexing | Page targeting, titles, internal links, technical fixes |
| Discovery | AI tools and Maps describe you wrong or name a competitor | Answers to real buyer questions, Business Profile, listings, schema | Entity clarity, listing cleanup, structured content, reviews |
| Conversion | Traffic shows up and inquiries don’t | Calls to action, forms, phone links, trust signals near the ask | Fixes to the path from page to contact |
| Tracking | You can’t tell what’s working | Key events for calls, emails, and forms; Search Console connected | Measurement setup before any other spend |
Only one of those rows is a design problem. A rebuild can address all six, but only if someone diagnosed them first.
What to check before redesigning your website
We start with the basics: does the site work properly on every screen size, and when were its content, plugins, and WordPress version last updated? Then, with access to your Google Search Console, Google Analytics, and Google Business Profile, this is the evidence we examine.
- Search Console: which queries and pages earn impressions and clicks, and where the gap between them is widest.
- Analytics: whether phone taps, email clicks, and form submissions are recorded as key events at all.
- Business Profile and listings: name, address, phone, services, and service area, compared line by line against your website.
- AI answers: what ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews say when someone asks the question your buyer asks.
- Competitors: who shows up instead of you, on Google and in AI answers, and what their pages do that yours don’t.
- Structure: indexing, page hierarchy, and whether your structured data matches what’s visible on the page, which Google’s own guidance calls out.
For example, a business might say “serving Bend and Central Oregon” on its homepage but list only Bend in its Google Business Profile, while its schema names a different area again. A visual refresh alone would not resolve those inconsistencies. Comparing the sources line by line would.
What our Visibility Diagnostic delivers
The Visibility Diagnostic is a paid, $750 deep dive into how Google and AI tools see your business. It includes a 60-minute review session, then your Visibility Blueprint within three business days: a written, prioritized plan for what to fix first. It covers four areas:
- SEO: site health (including mobile performance and how current your plugins and WordPress version are), page content, service and location pages, and keyword opportunities.
- AI visibility: how your business shows up in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and other AI answers.
- Google Business Profile and listings: name, address, and phone consistency, reviews, and listings beyond Google.
- Tracking: Google Analytics, Search Console, and lead tracking for calls, emails, and forms.
The Blueprint shows where competitors are beating you and puts the fixes in order. It doesn’t assume a rebuild. Sometimes the first priority is a page rewrite or a listings cleanup, and sometimes it’s a full rebuild. Either way, you decide with evidence in hand, and implementation is a separate decision.
The fee also carries forward: move ahead within 60 days and the full $750 is credited toward your website or retainer (details in the FAQ below). Start with a free consult to see whether it’s a fit.
Free audit or paid strategy?
“Why pay when free audits exist?” Free scans exist, and our free 30-minute consult is real. We’ll show you how AI tools describe your business today and where the obvious gaps are.
A free scan grades what exists. An automated score alone does not establish which issue matters most for your business, or what to do first. That takes time inside your actual data, and that time is what the Diagnostic pays for. And if you move forward within 60 days, it’s credited in full.
“Won’t you just tell me to rebuild?” If the evidence says your structure is the problem, yes. If it doesn’t, the Blueprint says so. Our published range for website projects is $6,500 to $15,000, so it pays to know what a rebuild would fix before you commit to one.
Who the Diagnostic fits
- Established service businesses whose site looks fine but isn’t bringing in the right inquiries.
- Owners weighing a redesign who want to know what it should fix before they sign.
- Businesses that rank on Google but don’t show up, or show up wrong, when buyers ask AI.
We work with service businesses in Bend and Central Oregon, the Portland metro, and Lake Oswego, and we work with clients virtually as well as locally.
Frequently asked questions
Is a visibility diagnostic the same as an SEO audit?
Not quite. SEO audits vary, and many cover content and strategy as well as technical health. Our Diagnostic looks across SEO, AI visibility, your Business Profile and listings, and tracking together, then ranks what to fix first.
Do I have to rebuild my website to improve visibility?
Not necessarily. Some problems can be addressed with targeted changes to pages, listings, or tracking. Others do call for a rebuild, and the Diagnostic is how you find out which you have.
How much does the Visibility Diagnostic cost?
$750, and the full fee is credited toward a new website, a website rebuild, or the first month of an SEO and AI visibility retainer with a minimum six-month commitment when you move forward within 60 days. Start with a free 30-minute consult so we can determine whether it’s a fit.
How long does the Diagnostic take?
We start with a 60-minute review session. Your Visibility Blueprint arrives within three business days after that session.
Does the Diagnostic include fixing the issues?
No. The Blueprint is the plan. Implementation can be a website project or an SEO and AI visibility retainer, scoped on its own.
Can you guarantee I’ll show up in Google or ChatGPT?
No one can honestly guarantee that. We show you where you stand and which fixes are most likely to move it.
